Merlin on BBC

Last season I had a few favorite shows of which one was Merlin which originally aired on the BBC. It really felt like the season abruptly ended here on NBC without a real season cliff hanger like you expect in most seasons, as if the production company really didn't know when it would end. It was one of those rare Sunday evening shows you actually looked forward to seeing because Sundays are usually terrible TV days. On a few of these Sundays we actually got 2 Merlins back to back so I think the season felt shorter than it should have.
I went to the BBC website last night to the Merlin pages and noticed that the second season had started up there in the UK and that a few videos were available to watch, and several teaser videos as well. Of course they don't want Americans to watch it and so they are all blocked. I went so far as to try and use a web proxy which was apparently a waste of time and only provided me with a bazillion pop-up ads after inserting the BBC webpage into the middle of a sea of ads, and the videos no longer claimed I was in the wrong place but still refused to play because the site now claimed that Java scripting had been disabled. So, of course I gave up.
The fact is, there is no guarantee that NBC will pick up a second season of Merlin. TV Executives have been notoriously stupid over the years and taken perfectly good shows off the air because they couldn't manage the show popularity or advertising correctly or made the "sacrifice" in order to show a new show which wasn't nearly as good. Of course, its not always the TV Execs, sometimes its the production company. Dead Like Me comes to mind.
I got to say tho, I'm really glad Castle and Eureka seem to be going strong, and the new show Stargate: Universe is so far quite awesome. Now, if they would only bring back Farscape with the original cast, and Firefly too, I'd be in heaven.

Stargate: UniverseYou shall not sway me Sir. I've enjoyed the last 3 episodes of Stargate: Universe. Are there things I have a problem with? Sure.
I'm not terribly tickled by the instant ancient stone communications with Earth, but they established such communication in SG1 between Galaxies. I was getting tired of SG1 and SG Atlantis being so formula driven. Both series had gems in them however. I can see a formula starting to appear in this new series too. What I like about the new show is that there is a very small measure of support from Earth, and that there appears to be some military hostility developing between the Colonels on opposite sides of the stones. I also enjoy the mystery of new locations, and the renewed mystery of their immediate surroundings. SGA never fully explored the possibilities of their Ancient City. I'm curious to see where they take this adventure. What's funny to me, is that my 2 favorite SG1 and SGA shows both involved time travel. So far with SG:U I don't have one, obviously too few to choose from. |

I also loved Merlin, and waiting for another season. You can probably find the new episodes through unofficial means. I like to wait a little so I have something to watch when regular shows here are on break. Have you tried any other BBC (America) shows? If you like Merlin, I suggest Robin Hood.
My other faves are Primevil, Torchwood, both of which seem to be on indefinite hiatus/canceled but could be back if we give them enough DVD sales, like they did with Farscape. Also, I am starting to like the new Stargate Universe, seems a little more realistic than the other shows, which I could never get into much. It runs at a different pace, a different storytelling style, so give it time. Plus it could draw in new viewers. It actually reminded me of this summers series Defying Gravity (Canadian import). That one I hear they are now trying to place during midseason, so future looks promising. Do a search online for it, it's worth a watch. |
